Notably, The Attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco occurred during the intervening night of March 18 and 19, 2023. The assailants, purportedly Garamkhaili supporters, infiltrated the consulate premises and attempted to set it ablaze. Additionally, they vandalized the consulate building and raised Khalistani flags on the premises, causing significant damage and injuring embassy officials.

The NIA initiated an investigation into the matter on June 16, 2023, registering a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 109, 120-B, 147, 148, 149, 323, 436, 448, and 452, as well as Section 13 of the UA(P) Act, among others. Following the case registration, an NIA team visited San Francisco in August to further probe the incident and gather crucial evidence.
