CJI immediately convened the Collegium, which unanimously decided to transfer Justice Verma back to the Allahabad High Court
Delhi High Court Judge to Be Transferred After Accidental Cash Discovery at His Residence:The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Sanjiv Khanna, on March 20, unanimously decided to immediately transfer a Delhi High Court judge, Justice Yashwant Verma, after it came to the CJI’s knowledge that a large amount of unaccounted cash was accidentally discovered at his residence following a fire incident.
A fire reportedly broke out at Justice Verma’s residence on March 14. At the time of the incident, he was not present at home. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters, while assessing the damage, accidentally discovered a large amount of cash stacked in a room. The matter was gradually escalated to the Union Home Ministry and was reportedly brought to the attention of the central government, which then informed the Chief Justice of India.
Taking cognizance of the seriousness of the matter, the CJI immediately convened the Collegium, which unanimously decided to transfer Justice Verma back to the Allahabad High Court, where he was appointed as a judge before being transferred to Delhi in 2021.
The Collegium judges expressed concerns that if Justice Verma is only transferred without further action, it may raise questions about the credibility of the judiciary. They have recommended additional measures.
However, there is no official confirmation of this decision yet.
