PM Modi Inaugurates Guwahati Airport’s New Terminal, Northeast India’s Largest Facility
On Saturday, December 20, 2025, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. This marks a remarkable milestone in aviation infrastructure for Northeast India. Officials described the facility as the largest airport terminal in the entire Northeast region, designed to expand passenger capacity and modernise air connectivity across the region.
According to airport authorities, the estimated cost of the newly inaugurated terminal is around INR 4,000 crore. It is capable of handling approximately 13.1 million passengers per year. During the event, PM Modi highlighted the role of improved infrastructure in boosting both commerce and tourism.
Government officials said that the total project outlay is about INR 5,000 crore, out of which around INR 1,000 crore has been allocated specifically for advanced Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. They added that the expanded airport will serve not only Assam but also emerge as a crucial aviation gateway for the wider Northeastern region.
The terminal’s architectural design draws inspiration from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, integrating aesthetic elements that reflect the region’s unique identity across its vast structure, which covers around 140,000 square metres. Airport officials said this thematic approach aims to provide passengers with a distinctive sense of place and pride.
The airport itself is named after Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the first chief minister of Assam. PM Modi also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bordoloi outside the airport premises, underscoring his historical importance to the state.
Ahead of the inauguration, PM Modi had shared images of the terminal on social media, calling the development a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure” and stressing that increased capacity will mean better ease of living for citizens.
Officials said that during his Assam visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to pay floral tributes to martyrs of the historic Assam Movement and participate in significant industrial ceremonies in Dibrugarh, reinforcing the centre’s development focus on the region.
