“PM Modi Highlights SIR in Assam, Claims Congress Shields ‘Infiltrators’”

On Saturday, while addressing a public rally in Guwahati, Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and criticised the Congress party for allegedly shielding “infiltrators” and undermining national security.

According to the PM, the Election Commission of India launched the SIR exercise to ensure that unlawful entrants, whom he referred to as “infiltrators”, are identified and excluded from the electoral process.  This revision is essential to uphold the integrity of elections and protect Assam’s social and political fabric.

Modi accused political opponents of opposing SIR and said that some actors are acting as “deshdrohis” (traitors) by trying to protect these alleged infiltrators within the democratic system. He used sharp rhetoric to frame these efforts as threats to Assam’s identity and security, asserting that the government’s work seeks to rectify past lapses.

Directly aiming at the Congress, the Prime Minister argued that the party had neglected Assam and the Northeast for many decades. He implied that it provided protection to those undermining Assam’s demographic balance. Modi said his government is reversing that legacy and focusing on both security and development across the region.

The rally emphasised Modi’s broader narrative that national security and illegal immigration are main concerns for voters in Assam, especially ahead of upcoming elections. He linked SIR to efforts to protect indigenous populations and stressed that his administration is committed to safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Modi’s address also reiterated his government’s focus on the Northeast’s development, positioning the BJP’s policies as corrective to what he described as decades of neglect under previous administrations.

The Prime Minister’s statements at the Guwahati rally were part of the BJP’s wider political strategy to address voter concerns on security, illegal immigration, and regional development.
