18 cases identified in Goa, and one case each reported in Kerala and Maharashtra

Covid-19 JN.1 Cases in India Update: As the nation battles the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, 20 fresh cases of the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been reported across three states in India, drawing attention to the evolving dynamics of the virus. The Indian SARS Cov-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), comprising 10 national laboratories under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, revealed this data, urging states and union territories to maintain heightened vigilance.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, in response to the rise in Covid-19 cases and the emergence of the JN.1 variant, conducted a comprehensive review of health facilities nationwide. With India witnessing the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases since May 21, the Union Health Ministry's data indicates 614 new infections, contributing to an increase in the active case count, which now stands at 2,311.

The JN.1 variant, currently classified as a 'variant of interest' by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been identified in multiple countries, including the US, China, Singapore, and India. Although the WHO has not declared it a 'variant of concern,' the global health body acknowledges the rapid increase in JN.1 cases and classifies it under the BA2.86 lineage associated with the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID).

Amid growing concerns, the WHO's distinction of JN.1 as a 'variant of interest' underscores the need for continued monitoring and surveillance. The Union Health Minister emphasizes vigilance at the state level, urging increased surveillance to curb the potential spread of the sub-variant.

As India navigates through this new phase in the fight against Covid-19, the focus remains on proactive measures and collaborative efforts to mitigate the impact of emerging variants.
