Mass Methanol Poisoning Prompts Arrests and Administrative Overhaul in Tamil Nadu District

Kallakurichi Hooch Liquor Tragedy death toll latest news: In a tragic incident, 33 people have died after consuming spurious liquor in Kallakurichi district. 

The incident, which highlights significant administrative lapses, has led to the transfer of the district collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath and the suspension of SP Samay Singh Meena.

The new district collector, M S Prasanth, confirmed 29 deaths, but government sources have indicated the toll could rise. Over 50 people consumed the tainted liquor in Karunapuram colony, with initial investigations revealing methanol contamination.

Authorities have arrested ten individuals, including two women, and have recovered about 900 litres of illicit liquor since Wednesday. The entire Prohibition Enforcement Wing in Kallakurichi has been replaced following the incident. 

Ministers E V Velu and Ma Subramanian are overseeing relief efforts, with Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also en route to the affected area. The opposition has criticized the ruling DMK government, and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami is expected to visit the victims' families.

Blood samples of the deceased have been sent to forensic labs for further analysis.
