He added that being in jail does not allow him to meet the Union minister in person.
Abdul Rashid Sheikh, an MP from Baramulla in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has written to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar, seeking urgent intervention for the rescue and safe evacuation of Kashmiri students trapped in Iran amid the tense situation there.
Rashid Sheikh, in the letter addressed to S Jaishankar, said, “It is with reference to rescuing hundreds of Kashmiris, mostly students, from various parts of Iran, where the situation has deteriorated drastically and uncertainty, unfortunately, seems unending.”
He added that the families are “very much worried” about the “fate and safety” of their loved ones.
The Baramulla MP called the concerns genuine, while adding that the threats “seem real.” He sought the intervention of the ministry, saying, “Your intervention is the only hope for the families.”
He added that being in jail does not allow him to meet the Union minister in person.

“Being in jail, I can neither unfortunately meet your good self nor can tell you over the subject. The trapped citizens need to be evacuated at the earliest.”
Abdul Rashid Sheikh requested Jaishankar to treat the letter as an ‘SOS’ call on behalf of the trapped Kashmiris and ensure their safety, including evacuation from various parts of Iran, before it gets too late.
“I am eagerly waiting for your response,” he added.
The letter, dated January 15, was sent from Tihar Jail, where the MP is currently lodged.
According to sources, some of the Indian nationals, most of them students, are coming back to India from Iran late tonight (Friday). They come on their own, via routine scheduled flights, it said.
Currently, the internet is suspended across the country. Iran has held the US and Israel responsible for the deaths in the country during the unrest, alleging that they supplied “live weapons” to the protesters.
