Congress Working Committee member Supriya Shrinate on Thursday flagged that India’s trade deficit with China has more than tripled, reaching $116.1 billion, despite rising security concerns.
Supriya Shrinate claimed that over the past 11 years under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi–led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), “India's trade dependence on China has been consistently rising.”
She made the claims in a statement issued in a post on her X (formerly Twitter.)
Shrinate said that in 2014, India’s trade deficit with China stood at $37.8 billion, which increased to $99.21 billion in 2024, and further surged to a record high of $116.12 billion in 2025.
Shrinate also listed key “anti-India Chinese actions” over the past 11 years. She highlighted the following actions by China, which she described as anti-India:
- Incursions in Ladakh; ongoing border crisis since 2020
- Galwan Valley clash — 20 Indian soldiers martyred
- Road construction in Doklam, leading to a standoff
- Renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh
- Settlement of villages in Indian territory
- Supporting Pakistan during Operation Sindoor
- Construction activities in the Shaksgam Valley (J&K)
- Detention of an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh while insisting on a Chinese passport
- Blocking UN designation of Masood Azhar and other terrorists as global terrorists
“But despite all of this, Modi govt has increased India's dependence on China manifold,” she added.
