Pongal Celebration: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attended Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan in Delhi.
Addressing the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Pongal has become a global festival and people who love Tamil culture across the world celebrate it with enthusiasm. PM Modi said he is one of them.
“Pongal is a pleasant experience in our daily life. There is a feeling of gratitude towards the hard work of the food giver, the earth and the sun...” he added.
PM Modi further said that the Pongal festival shows the way to create a balance between nature, family and society.
He extended wishes to the people of Tamil Nadu in India and around the world, wishing them a very happy Pongal.
Recalling his visit to Tamil Nadu last year, PM Modi said that he had offered prayers at the thousand-year-old Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in the state.
“In Varanasi, during the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, I was connected to the energy of cultural unity every moment,” PM Modi added.
“When I went to Rameswaram for the inauguration of the Pamban Bridge, I once again witnessed the greatness of Tamil history. Our Tamil culture is a shared heritage of the whole of India. Not only that, it is a shared heritage of all of humanity. The spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat that I talk about is further strengthened by festivals like Ponga,” he further added.
Talking about Pongal and farmers, the Prime Minister said that in Tamil culture, farmers are considered the foundation of life, while adding that “farmers are strong partners in nation-building.”
He highlighted that the “Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign” is gaining great strength from the efforts of farmers.
“The central government is also continuously working with commitment to empower the farmers,” he added.
Further speaking about Pongal and its significance, PM Modi said the festival inspires everyone to be grateful to nature.
“When this earth gives us so much, it is our responsibility to cherish it. Keeping the soil healthy, conserving water, and using resources judiciously are crucial for the next generation,” he added.
The Prime Minister further said that government campaigns like Mission LiFE, One Tree for Mother, and Amrit Sarovar promote this very spirit.
“We are continuously working to make agriculture more sustainable and environmentally friendly,” he added.
He noted that in the future, sustainable farming methods, water management, natural farming, agri-tech, and value addition will play a crucial role.
Recalling his visit to Tamil Nadu several months ago, PM Modi praised the youth of the state for their excellent work in natural farming.
“They are leaving behind lucrative professional careers to work in the fields. I met them. I urge my young Tamil friends involved in agriculture to further expand this campaign to bring about a revolution in sustainable farming,” he added.
