Shivraj Patil: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the family of former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil, who passed away at the age of 90 in his hometown of Latur, Maharashtra, on Friday.

The Prime Minister, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, “Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji. He was an experienced leader, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha during his long years in public life. He was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society. I have had many interactions with him over the years, the most recent one being when he came to my residence a few months ago.”

“My thoughts are with his family in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” the post further read.

According to the Indian Express, the late minister is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, a BJP leader, and two granddaughters.

Patil had also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.

Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has paid tribute to the leader and expressed condolences to the grieving family. 

"The news of the demise of former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Shri Shivraj Patil ji is extremely heartbreaking and an irreparable loss for the party. His dedication to public service and his contributions to the nation will always be remembered. In this hour of grief, my condolences are with the entire Patil family, their well-wishers, and supporters," Rahul Gandhi wrote in Hindi in a post on his X handle. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also expressed his "heartfelt" condolences to the family. 

Congress MP KC Venugopal speaking to the media on the passing away of the Congress leader, said, "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Shivraj Patil ji. He was the best Speaker of this Lok Sabha and one of the most successful Home Ministers of this country. For the Congress party, he was truly a guiding force for us over the last many years..."
