InterGlobe Aviation’s board, the parent company of IndiGo, has taken a significant step to understand and address the airline’s recent operational disruptions by appointing an external aviation expert to conduct an independent investigation into the causes of the widespread flight disruptions.

On Friday, according to a statement, the board engaged Chief Aviation Advisors LLC, headed by veteran expert Captain John Illson, to carry out a thorough root-cause analysis of the operational breakdowns that began on December 2. The expert is expected to start the review immediately and will submit a comprehensive report to the board once the assessment is complete.

Airline sources confirmed that the decision was taken after significant service disruptions across IndiGo’s network, which have drawn public scrutiny and impacted thousands of passengers. According to the board, while the airline has not disclosed all factors behind the operational issues in its statement, the appointment of an independent reviewer reflects an effort to ensure transparency and identify both systemic weaknesses and areas for improvement in operations management.

The board’s move comes amid mounting pressure on IndiGo to give an explanation for the large-scale disruptions occurring at the country’s largest domestic carrier. InterGlobe Aviation mentioned in its communication that the expert’s analysis will look at the contributing factors and help the airline build more robust processes to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

In addition to commissioning the external review, the board has already established a crisis management group in response to the operational turmoil that began earlier this month, the company said. The group’s mandate includes advising the board on immediate corrective steps and long-term strategic measures.

Experts said that the airline works to restore confidence among passengers and regulators, as IndiGo’s actions are being closely watched by industry stakeholders. The outcome of the expert review is expected to play a major role in shaping the carrier’s operational and regulatory response in the upcoming weeks.
