IndiGo to Compensate Flight-Affected Passengers with Rs 10,000 Travel Vouchers
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced a special compensation measure following widespread flight cancellations and long delays during early December. In an official statement on Thursday, the airline said it will provide travel vouchers worth INR 10,000 to each passenger whose flight was either cancelled or significantly delayed between December 3 and December 5. This move is to address the hardship faced by customers who were “severely impacted” by extensive congestion at several airports during that period.
IndiGo acknowledged in the statement that a portion of its customers were stranded for many hours due to the operational disruptions between December 3 and 5. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and described the compensation as a means of support.
The INR 10,000 voucher will be valid for use on any future IndiGo journey for the next 12 months to give affected passengers flexibility to redeem the amount for travel planned within that period.
The airline highlighted that these vouchers are in addition to mandatory compensation requirements under Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms. It means passengers will still receive other statutory compensation as applicable for cancellations and delays. Under current government guidelines, IndiGo will provide compensation ranging from INR 5,000 up to INR 10,000 depending on the block time of flights that were cancelled within 24 hours of departure.
The airline has faced mounting regulatory pressure in recent days amid the operational crisis. Authorities have directed IndiGo to reduce its winter flight schedule by 10 per cent to help stabilise operations after a series of cancellations that began on December 2. At the time of the disruptions, the carrier was operating approximately 2,300 flights per day.
IndiGo aims to address passenger dissatisfaction and restore confidence following one of the most challenging periods in its operational history by offering these additional vouchers and reaffirming compliance with DGCA compensation rules.
