Tahawwur Rana to Be Extradited to India in 26/11 Case, Delhi Court Receives Trial Records, Latest News: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the key accused and alleged plotter in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, who is being extradited to India after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his plea against the move, to arrive Delhi on a special flight, shortly. A multi-agency Indian team has gone to the U.S. to bring him back, and he is likely to be lodged under tight security at Tihar Jail.
In preparation for his arrival, a Delhi court has received the trial records of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The records were sent following an earlier directive by District Judge Vimal Kumar Yadav, as reported by PTI.
The central government has appointed advocate Narender Mann as the special public prosecutor to oversee the trial and related proceedings concerning the case.
Former Israeli Ambassador to India, Daniel Carmon, reacted to the development, telling ANI: "Knowing how terrible the terror attack was for India and the people of Mumbai, this is a great development... Israel has always stood with India in the fight against terrorism."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the extradition as a “big success” and took a political swipe at the Congress, stating, "Governments under whose rule the bomb blasts took place could not bring him back."
Union Minister Piyush Goyal also criticized the Congress party, telling ANI: "During Congress' time… they didn’t take steps to punish those involved. Even the one who was caught, Kasab, was served Biryani. Those who attacked our country—this is PM Modi's resolve to bring them to justice. Every Indian is proud that they will be punished on Indian soil."
However, Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar urged the BJP not to politicize the matter. "Rana should be quickly brought to India and hanged. A person who attacked Mumbai and took so many lives should not be spared. This matter should not be politicized," he said.
According to ANI, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed the surrender warrant for Rana's extradition on February 11. Although his legal team filed an emergency motion to halt the order, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the petition on April 7.
The extradition comes 17 years after the 2008 attacks. Former Indian diplomat K.P. Fabian commented, "While we welcome the U.S. decision, it's important to note that the 26/11 attacks occurred in 2008. It has taken 17 years for the extradition, despite India providing credible evidence early on. Had the roles been reversed, and the accused in the 9/11 attacks was in India, the U.S. would not have waited this long. The American legal process is slow, and successive administrations could have acted more swiftly."
