The Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly has sought an explanation from the Punjab Police for “interfering” in the matter.
The Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat has written to the DGP Punjab, the Special DGP-Cyber Cell Punjab, and the Police Commissioner of Jalandhar, Punjab, directing them to submit a written explanation in connection with a matter related to the Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition and AAP leader Atishi.
In a communication issued by the Secretariat, signed by Ranjeet Singh, reference was made to a press release issued by the Jalandhar Police.
Talking about the press release issued by Punjab Police, Jalandhar, the Secretariat wrote, “It mentions that an FIR has been lodged in the matter of a video clip of the proceedings of the Delhi Assembly dated 6th January 2026. The Press Release also states that the video was forensically examined and found to have been deliberately doctored. The Press Release was brought to the notice of the Hon'ble Speaker during the sitting of the House held on 9th January 2026.”
The Secretariat, in its direction, stated that the House is already formally dealing with the matter related to Atishi’s statement made on the floor of the Delhi Assembly, wherein she allegedly made certain remarks against the Sikh Gurus.
“The matter has been referred to the Committee of Privileges of the Delhi Assembly. On the request of the Hon'ble Members of Opposition, the video clip has already been sent for Forensic examination,” the notice read.
The Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly has sought an explanation from the Punjab Police for “interfering” in the matter.
“In such a situation wherein, the Hon'ble Speaker and the House is seized of the matter which is exclusively within the domain of the privileged House, the House has expressed its grave concern over the action of the Punjab Police. The Hon'ble Speaker has taken cognizance of the matter and directed that explanation be sought as to how the Punjab Police could interfere in this matter. The proceedings of the House are privileged and the property of the House. Any issue or complaint regarding it has to be brought to the notice of the Speaker before any action is taken on it,” the statement read.
The Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly has directed the Police Commissioner, Jalandhar, Punjab, to submit a written explanation on the entire matter along with relevant documents, including a copy of the complaint, copy of the FIR, and the forensic laboratory report, on or before 12th January 2026 (within 48 hours) without fail to the undersigned.
