Rahul Gandhi stirred controversy at the University of Texas, USA.
What is the real meaning of Devata? Ever since Rahul Gandhi's video defining 'devata' went viral on social media, people have started criticizing him and even started looking for the real meaning of the word 'devata'.
Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the students at the University of Texas, USA, said, "Devta means a person whose internal feelings are the same as his external expression, meaning he is a completely transparent being. If a person tells me everything he believes or thinks and expresses it openly, that’s the definition of a Devta."
What is the real meaning of Devata?
As per the website mayiliragu.com, "A devata is a devata! Let's keep it simple. There is no need to find a non-Vedic equivalent to it. Translated scriptures can never present the authenticity of a pramaNa (evidence) to its fullest. This is because the English vocabulary is very narrow to accommodate every possible word to describe the profoundness of a Vedic term."
"One of the most corrupted translations comes to the term 'devata', which includes the variants 'deva' and 'devi' as well. If you watched the movie Kantara with English subtitles, you will notice the word 'devata' being mistranslated to 'demigod'," it added, claiming that the words 'deva' and 'devi' are very well found in the Collin's dictionary!
Likewise, a website named mmpandit, stated, "the roots of the term 'devata' match the real life experience which comes from the life of the saints and of common devotees. This gives us a greater understanding of the term Devata from a Hindu perspective and since the term is very old, it also points to the Hindu belief that the Devata is veritably a part of one’s family and indeed in his/her playful (sportive) incarnation someone who can be personified as a Mother (and indeed as a sister/son/brother and as a friend)."
