Panic gripped residents in Lakhanpur village in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh after abandoned foetuses were found in the area, the police said today. The residents claimed that the foetuses were thrown in a forest area after an illegal abortion. The police have removed the foetuses and sent them for a post-mortem examination.

"The number of foetuses could be one or two. The correct number can be ascertained only after the post-mortem report is obtained. Most of the foetuses were in a semi-rotten state," Additional Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Srivastava said. A case will be registered and an investigation will be undertaken to initiate "action against the erring hospital, if any," Srivastava said.
