Why is Bharat Bandh on July 9? Nationwide Strike May Disrupt Key Services
Why is Bharat Bandh on July 9? Latest News: Over 25 crore workers across various sectors—including banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, highway construction, and more—are expected to participate in a nationwide general strike on Wednesday, July 9, according to a report by The Hindu. The strike, called Bharat Bandh, may lead to widespread disruption of essential services across the country.
The bandh has been called by a forum of 10 central trade unions and their associated federations to protest what they describe as the government’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national pro-corporate policies.” The forum has urged workers and citizens to make the strike a “grand success.”
Sectors Likely to be Affected
- The report mentions that the following sectors are expected to be impacted:
- Banking and insurance services
- Postal services
- Coal mining and factory operations
- State transport services
- Public sector undertakings (PSUs)
- Various government departments
However, schools, colleges, and private offices are expected to remain open.
Railway Services: As of now, there is no official announcement of a nationwide railway strike. However, train services may experience delays or disruptions due to protests and blockades in various parts of the country.
Reasons Behind the Strike: The trade union forum has listed several reasons for the nationwide protest.
It states that the BJP-led NDA government has not conducted the annual labour conference for the past 10 years.
The government is accused of imposing four labour codes that allegedly weaken collective bargaining rights, limit union activities, and favour corporate interests under the pretext of promoting the ‘ease of doing business.’
The forum claims these policies are contributing to rising unemployment, growing inequality, and worsening conditions for the poor, lower-income groups, and the middle class.
It also criticized the government’s practice of re-hiring retired employees instead of offering regular appointments to the youth, calling it harmful to the country’s long-term economic and social growth.
