PM Narendra Modi on Farmers' Rights and Donald Trump Tariff Latest News
New Delhi: In a major declaration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reaffirmed India’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of its farmers. The statement came amid mounting international trade pressure, especially with the United States. While addressing at MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India would never compromise on the interests of its agricultural community.
“For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority,” he said, adding, “India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it.”
The statement comes just a day after the US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian imports, citing concerns related to India's growing energy trade with Russia. This led to a diplomatic standoff between the two nations, wherein India called the decision "unjustified" and vowed to protect its national interests.
Prime Minister’s statement is being considered a direct response to the mounting global pressure, particularly from Washington, and even to the questions being raised by the opposition. The US has been criticizing India’s trade choices, especially the rising purchase of Russian crude oil.
US officials believe that such imports undermine international efforts related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However, India has maintained that its energy purchases are only for the national interest and the need to ensure affordable and secure supplies for its 1.4 billion citizens.
