Tesla Signs Lease Deal to Open First Showroom in India for EV Sales latest news: U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has signed a lease deal in Mumbai to open its first showroom for selling imported EVs in India, with the first year’s rent amounting to $446,000.
According to a report published by Reuters, Elon Musk-owned Tesla is set to open its first EV showroom in India. The 4,003-square-foot showroom is located in the Maker Maxity building within the Bandra Kurla Complex, near Mumbai Airport.
As per registration papers reviewed by Reuters, the company has signed a five-year lease starting from February 16, 2025, with the first year's rent amounting to $446,000.
In February, the automaker also advertised 13 job openings, including roles in both front-end and back-end operations, for candidates based in Mumbai and Delhi. This move came just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tesla CEO Elon Musk during his two-day visit to the U.S.
Tesla has not sold cars in India due to high import duties, although the company has long been interested in the Indian market. Tesla faces a major challenge in India because of these high taxes, which make its imported cars very costly.
That’s why Musk has been pushing for lower import duties. However, with India's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070 and the growing demand for sustainable solutions, the country presents a promising opportunity for Tesla.
