Delhi Police on Friday stated that the “hype” around a surge in missing girls in the national capital is being pushed through “paid promotion.”

In a statement issued on its official X account, Delhi Police wrote, “After following a few leads, we discovered that the hype around the surge in missing girls in Delhi is being pushed through paid promotion.”

Indicating alleged monetary gain behind such content promotion, it added, “Creating panic for monetary gains won't be tolerated, and we'll take strict action against such individuals.”

Yesterday, in a separate statement, Delhi Police termed reports of missing children in the national capital as “rumour” and appealed to citizens not to fall prey to them.

“Recent public discourse has raised concerns about the welfare of children in Delhi. We appeal to the citizens not to fall prey to the rumours about the spurt in the cases of missing children,” the Delhi Police statement read.

Recent reports had suggested that a large number of people, including children and women, went missing in the first fifteen days of January 2026, indicating mass trafficking, with over 800 missing persons.

Denying these claims, police warned alleged “rumour mongers” of strict legal action for creating panic and fear through data misinterpretation.

“While denying such claims, we also warn rumour mongers of strict legal action for creating unnecessary panic and fear by misrepresenting data,” the statement read.

It added that the department is making efforts to trace all missing persons and reunite them with their distraught family members at the earliest.
