Chandigarh to Receive 100 E-Buses Soon latest news: Chandigarh is set to receive 100 electric buses soon, replacing old diesel buses in the city. The Transport Department has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for the purchase of these e-buses, according to an Amar Ujala report.

The tender for the buses will be issued by the Transport Department itself. However, since the Centre is providing a subsidy for the project, approval has been sought. The department has received a response from the Centre requesting a copy of the Request for Proposal (RFP), which will be sent on Monday, the report said.

The new electric buses will replace 100 diesel buses at CTU’s Depot No. 4. These buses, which were allotted to Chandigarh during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will be retired between November and January after completing their 15-year operational life. The buses include green-colored non-AC and red-colored AC diesel buses, which currently serve thousands of passengers across Tricity and consume excessive diesel.

CTU had received approval for a subsidy under the PM e-Bus Scheme about 18 months ago for 100 electric buses. Following this, the Transport Department initiated the procurement process and sought MHA's approval to issue the tender.

The Centre has asked for a copy of the RFP to review the terms and conditions for the purchase. The Transport Department is preparing to send it on Monday.

The deployment of 100 e-buses is already in progress, and the tender will be issued as soon as the Centre grants its approval. According to Transport Department Director Pradyuman Singh, CTU has partnered with PMI to deploy 100 ultra-low floor, 12-meter e-buses to replace the diesel buses at Depot No. 4. These buses will operate on a per-kilometre basis, with CTU paying rupees 61.80/km, and the Centre providing a subsidy of rupees 24/km. The rupees 550 crore tender awaits MHA's approval due to its scale.
