Woman, 14-Year-Old Daughter, and Two Boys Arrested for Husband’s Murder in Assam Latest News
A woman in Assam has reportedly been arrested, and her Class 9 daughter detained, along with two boys, on charges of murdering the woman’s husband, NDTV reported.
According to the report, the deceased, identified as Uttam Gogoi, was found dead in the Borbaruah area at Lahon Gaon in Dibrugarh on July 25.
Uttam's wife, Boby Sonowal Gogoi, and her daughter initially informed Uttam's brother that he had died of a stroke — one of the two stories they allegedly fabricated.
"I immediately rushed to his residence but found his ear cut. I also saw an open umbrella. Then I was told that a robbery had taken place in the house. If he died of a stroke, how did he sustain a cut on his ear?" the victim's brother was quoted as saying in the NDTV report.
"We approached the police, and today we learned that his wife, daughter, and two others were arrested on charges of murdering him," he added.
The two boys are reportedly close to Boby and her 14-year-old daughter, the NDTV report added.
Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Reddy stated that all the accused have been arrested and that the daughter has confessed to the crime.
Local residents in Borbaruah reportedly staged a protest at the Borbaruah police station, demanding strict punishment for the accused.
According to Northeast Live, the two boys accused in the murder have been identified as Dipjyoti Buragohain and Gouranga Patra, who are allegedly involved romantically with Boby and her daughter.
The murder is believed to have taken place on July 24. The report noted that the alleged motive behind the murder was an extramarital affair as well as a dispute over property belonging to the deceased.
The accused were arrested 10 days after the murder, the report said.
Boby reportedly tried to make the murder look like a robbery and initially told police that her husband was killed by robbers who stole her ornaments. However, the police reportedly recovered the so-called stolen ornaments from her own residence.
It remains unclear when exactly the murder took place, as the timelines reported by the two news outlets differ. While NDTV reported that the body was discovered on July 25, Northeast Live stated that the murder was allegedly carried out on July 24. Authorities have yet to confirm the precise time of death.
