22-Year-Old’s Body Found at IIT Bombay, Police Suspect Suicide
A 22-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead on the Powai campus on Saturday, Hindustan Times reported, citing police sources.
The deceased is suspected to have fallen from the rooftop of a hostel building. To ascertain the exact cause of death, investigations are underway as of Sunday morning.
The student hailed from Delhi and was a fourth-year student of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering program.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 10), Datta Nalawade, as quoted in the report, said the incident was reported at 2:30 a.m. by hostel authorities.
The deceased and a few other students had reportedly ordered dinner and taken it up to the rooftop of the hostel building on Friday night. After dinner, everyone left except for the deceased. At around 1:00 a.m., his colleagues reportedly found his body at the base of the building, according to police.
The police added that the student appears to have fallen from the terrace, and that his colleagues took him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
The body has been sent to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem examination.
As per the preliminary report, no foul play has been detected, and no suicide note was found.
Police are investigating the incident as a possible case of suicide or accident.
