9 percent of the people surveyed were from Category I cities

New-Delhi: About 39 percent of Indian households have fallen victim to online financial fraud during the last three years. Only 24 percent of them got their money back. This claim has been made by local circles in a report released on Tuesday.

In the survey, 23 percent of people said that they have been a victim of credit or debit card fraud and 13 percent said they had been defrauded by buy, sell and classifieds site users.

According to the survey, 13 percent people said that they were charged money through the website, but the product was not sent. 10 percent said they have been victims of ATM card fraud. Another 10 percent said they had been subject to bank account fraud and 16 percent said they were cheated in some other way.

An analysis of the data reveals that at least one member of 30 percent of the households surveyed has been a victim of financial fraud. Along with this, 9 percent said that several members of their family were victims of this type of fraud.

57 percent said that they and any member of their family have survived being a victim of online fraud. Four percent did not clearly express their opinion on the matter. The opinion of 32,000 people from 331 districts of the country were taken in the survey. 66 percent of them were male and 34 percent were female.

39 percent of the people surveyed were from Category I cities, 35 percent from Category II and 26 percent from Category III and IV cities and rural districts.
