Extreme Heatwave Grips Iran, Forces Unprecedented Nationwide Lockdown

NEW-DELHI: As India grapples with heavy rainfall in several regions, neighboring country Iran has taken an extraordinary measure in response to scorching temperatures. A two-day official holiday has been declared in Iran due to the intense heatwave, resulting in the closure of all schools, banks, and government offices on Wednesday and Thursday.

Authorities in Iran have cited the adverse impact of the soaring heat on people's health as the primary reason for the lockdown. Additionally, the country is facing electricity shortages due to increased consumption, leading to large-scale power cuts. The temperature has reached a staggering 50 degrees Celsius in southern Iranian cities, while many major cities, including the capital Tehran, recorded temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. An Iranian government spokesperson warned of an unprecedented heatwave in the coming days, prompting the nationwide lockdown decision.

On Tuesday, more than a dozen cities, including Tehran, reported temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, a rare occurrence in a country that is predominantly mountainous and low-lying. Typically, Iran experiences moderate temperatures, ranging between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius in most areas during this season. The rainy season in Iran lasts from November to May, with summers spanning from May to October. However, this year's heat has defied expectations, necessitating urgent measures to protect public health and conserve energy resources.

The Situation in Iran aligns with a global trend of intense heatwaves in various regions, where winter seasons are usually long and summer days are short. Countries like China, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe are also witnessing extreme heat events, challenging their conventional climate patterns.

The two-day lockdown, though unprecedented, underscores the severity of the heatwave in Iran and the government's commitment to safeguarding its citizens. As temperatures continue to surge, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging citizens to take necessary precautions to stay safe and hydrated during this challenging period.
