On Friday, the Jammu and Kashmir Government banned trekking, camping, hiking and similar outdoor activities in several high-altitude and forested areas of Kokernag, citing security concerns in the Anantnag district. This is as per an official order issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

The SDM’s order said that the decision follows inputs from police and security agencies about rising threats in sensitive zones. Recent incidents involving attempts by certain individuals to cross police checkpoints during late-night hours have raised serious public safety issues.

Invoking powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the order states that unrestricted movement and outdoor activities in the areas of Margan Top, Chauhar Nag and Sinthan Top could adversely impact public safety and security and are therefore prohibited with immediate effect, the district administration said.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Larnoo has been tasked with ensuring strict implementation and monitoring at checkpoints, and the public has been directed to comply with the order; violations will attract legal action.

The ban is set to remain in force for two months from the date of issuance unless it is withdrawn earlier or extended as per law, the order added.
