I am not talking about the women and caste shackles that cripple our society but the subservience to the British thought.
Have we truly moved towards freedom for all? The British Raj is being carried on all over the country in the traditions of the clubs established by them. Till date the dress code followed is set by our Lords and Masters of pre-partition era.
While visiting Kasauli Club, my father, who wears only Kurta-Pajama (the traditional Indian style), was denied entry into the club premises.
Men can only enter if they wear formal collar shirt with pants and shoes with socks. It was shocking to realise that we still follow the British rules.
Recently in one of the top Delhi clubs, Delhi Gymkhana, a governess was asked to leave. The rules continued the age old tradition of not allowing helpers to eat with the members.
In gardens where the children play allow the hired companions but do not allow "maids" to sit.
The logic of these rules was for the times when Indians were slaves and their dress code was set to differentiate them from their "masters".
The Indian slaves were hired as helpers, not to be treated as equals. The British used all the methods to brainwash the Indians into submission. But today British have been sent away but We, the people of India still follow the same rules.
Indian clothes, culture are being treated with contempt in free India but are we free? As per the clubs of India, our PM Modi would not be allowed entry but I don't see any political outfit running to change these rules.
Do we even know who we are? What is our heritage? What do we stand for? Are we changing with times? Or we are still dealing with after effects of slavery, pretending to be free but in reality we are still slaves to the "Gora Sahib".
