350th Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas: Haryana Assembly Passes Thanks Resolution
The state assembly unanimously adopted a resolution expressing gratitude to organisations and individuals who helped organise programmes commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. It was passed on the opening day of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha’s Winter Session. According to official sources, the resolution was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahipal Dhanda and led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The House formally expressed gratitude to the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (HSGMC), the Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas Organising Committee, public representatives, social service organisations and various civil institutions for successfully conducting events across the state in observance of the occasion.
Chief Minister Saini was wearing a saffron turban as a sign of respect. In his speech before the resolution was adopted, he said that Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice reflects the very soul of Indian civilisation – a spirit willing to uphold truth, righteousness and human dignity and never bow before injustice.
Saini recalled that on August 25, 2025, the Haryana Assembly had earlier unanimously resolved to observe the 350th martyrdom year of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur in a dignified and glorious manner across the state. He said that for the implementation, an all-party meeting was held in Chandigarh on November 3, where representatives of all political parties offered suggestions to make the celebratory programmes meaningful and inclusive.
Several members from both the treasury and opposition benches spoke during the debate and recalled the Guru’s sacrifices and emphasised his importance to both Sikh history and Indian ethos. Many MLAs began or concluded their addresses with the traditional Sikh greeting “Waheguruji ka Khalsa, Waheguruji ki Fateh.” Suggestions were also made about installing commemorative gates, providing special grants to villages associated with Sikh Gurus, and promoting Punjabi language and culture in schools.
According to sources, the House also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who paid homage to the Guru at a grand congregation held in Jyotisar, Kurukshetra, on November 25, highlighting the national profile of the commemorations.
While the resolution was adopted unanimously, Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda noted that local MLAs and opposition leaders were not invited to the Prime Minister’s programme, a point that drew responses and was addressed by Speaker Harvinder Kalyan, urging respect for the proceedings.
