BJP Sweeps Chandigarh Mayoral Polls; Saurabh Joshi Wins Historic ‘Show of Hands’ Vote
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today registered a clean sweep in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, securing all three top posts—Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor. According to the report, the results reaffirm the BJP’s dominance in the civic body despite a stiff challenge from the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alliance.
BJP councillor Saurabh Joshi was elected the new Mayor of Chandigarh, securing 18 votes. In the triangular contest, AAP’s Yogesh Dhingra received 11 votes, while Congress candidate Gurpreet Singh Gabbi polled 7 votes. The victory was mirrored in the other key posts, with BJP's Jasmanpreet Singh elected as Senior Deputy Mayor and Suman Sharma as Deputy Mayor, both securing 18 votes each.
The elections, which began at 11 am, were held under the new "show of hands" procedure. While the BJP held 18 councillors, the combined strength of the AAP (11) and Congress (6, plus the MP’s vote) created a potential tie of 18-18.
