Chandigarh Authorities Launch Major Demolition Drive at Sector 53 Furniture Market
Chandigarh, Demolition Drive at Sector 53 Furniture Market – A large-scale demolition drive is currently underway at Chandigarh’s Sectors 53 and 54 to clear out an unauthorised furniture market spread across over 15 acres of agricultural land. The market, which had been operating illegally since 1985, houses 116 shops, all of which are being removed as part of the action.
Multiple excavators have been deployed to carry out the demolition, while security in the area has been significantly increased in anticipation of resistance from shop owners and workers, many of whom are staging protests against the move.
In preparation for the operation, Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner held a review meeting on Friday and issued detailed directions related to safety protocols, fire safety, medical arrangements, and waste disposal. The administration has also announced the deployment of approximately 1,000 police personnel to maintain law and order during the drive.
"A review meeting was held under DC Chandigarh ahead of the July 20 demolition at Furniture Market, Sector 53. Directions issued for safety, fire, medical & waste clearance. Police to deploy ~1000 personnel to ensure smooth & secure execution," read an official post on X.
The administration had long ordered the removal of the unauthorised furniture market. Shopkeepers had requested relocation, but the Estate Officer denied the request. A final eviction notice was issued on June 22, 2024, yet no shops were vacated.
SDM (East) Khushpreet Kaur stated that vendors were repeatedly warned, and all action was paused until their representations were addressed. Announcements were made continuously over the past 10–12 days.
While the administration says the land was acquired in 2002 for sector development, shopkeepers claim to have operated there since 1986. A similar demolition attempt in February 2025 was halted due to political interference.
Meanwhile, customers rushed to the market on Saturday to grab discounted furniture before the demolition.
