100 Dog Bites Daily: Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Acts to Build City’s First Dog Shelter
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has intensified its efforts to curb stray dog attacks after data revealed the city averaged over 100 dog bites every day in 2025.
According to official reports, a staggering 36,515 incidents were recorded in just the first 11 months of the year, with July witnessing a peak of over 4,000 cases.
To address the growing stray terror and spiralling public health crisis, the civic body has submitted a detailed plan to the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) for the city’s first dedicated dog shelter.
The proposed two-storey facility, spread across 1.7 acres in Sector 25, is designed to house nearly 1,980 dogs and will include a veterinary clinic and exercise zones.
Officials said that while the permanent shelter is expected to be operational by December 31, 2026, immediate measures are already being taken.
The MC has begun relocating dogs from sensitive areas, such as hospitals and schools, to a temporary facility in Sector 38.
Despite claims that nearly all of the city’s 10,800 stray dogs have been sterilised, the high number of daily bites has prompted the administration to move toward long-term isolation and management strategies to ensure resident safety.
