The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has established itself as a premier national model for providing sophisticated medical interventions under the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). By successfully executing these high-end procedures, the institute has drastically improved healthcare accessibility for the nation’s most financially disadvantaged citizens.

During a media briefing on Friday, Director Vivek Lal highlighted PGIMER’s leadership in utilising government health initiatives to support vulnerable populations. He characterised Ayushman Bharat as a transformative systemic reform rather than a simple financial protection scheme, noting its profound impact on the structure of Indian healthcare delivery.

According to official data, the institute has provided care to a cumulative total of 175,676 beneficiaries since 2019. This performance solidifies its status as a top-tier public tertiary care facility within the programme.

Functioning as a vital national referral hub, PGIMER frequently manages complex cases where patients have run out of alternative treatment options. A geographical breakdown of the patient demographic reveals that the highest volume of beneficiaries originates from Punjab. Significant numbers also arrive from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandigarh. This diverse representation underscores the institute's essential role in the country’s medical infrastructure, ensuring that advanced clinical care remains reachable for those who need it most.
