Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget 2026–27 in Parliament, in which an allocation of Rs 2,504.65 crore has been proposed for the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
The proposed allocation reflects an increase of Rs 86.79 crore, marking a 3.59% rise over the Revised Estimates of FY 2025–26, aimed at strengthening tertiary healthcare services, medical education, and advanced research facilities, according to an official release from the Ministry of Finance.
The Union Budget 2026–27 also proposes a significant boost to medical research and innovation under the Department of Health Research. The allocation for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi has been enhanced to Rs 4,000 crore in BE 2026–27, reflecting an increase of Rs 850 crore, registering a 26.98% rise over the Revised Estimates of FY 2025–26 of Rs 3,150.50 crore.
A total of Rs 1,06,530.42 crore has been allocated to ministry of health and family welfare, registering nearly 10% rise from revised estimates of fy 2025–26.
