Chandigarh is expected to receive fresh spell of rains in coming days.
Chandigarh Weather Update news: While several parts of the country witnessed heavy rains at the month's end, Chandigarh didn't see heavy spells of rain. Chandigarh sees its driest June in 12 years.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there was just 11.9 mm of rain in the entire month. Amid soaring temperatures, the city braved the driest June since 2012.
At 11.9 mm, the rain was 92 percent below normal, which is 155.5 mm for the first of the four monsoon months. In strong contrast, a significant 142.9 mm of rain was recorded last year, before the all-time highest 738.7 mm of rain in July.
AK Singh, the director of IMD Chandigarh said, "There was too much heatwave in the month of June and in the first half of June, the city received no rain. Even in the second week, though there were some Western Disturbances (WD) and premonsoon showers, the delay in the monsoon’s arrival led to low rain.
Singh said there is a prediction of good rain in the month of July. While premonsoon showers started in the city at the beginning of this week, Chandigarh is one of the few places where monsoon has not been declared. Humidity also continues to rise, going up to 78% on Sunday.
On the other hand, the temperature was 39.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday but on Sunday it fell to 37 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature dipped slightly from 29.7 degrees Celsius to 28.7 degrees Celsius, also 1.6 degrees above normal. Over the next three days, the maximum temperature will hover between 33 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will remain between 27 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius.
