Air Travel Becomes Expensive For Raksha Bandhan Weekend

Airfare travel prices ahead of Rakshabandhan 2024: The average economy-class fare on major routes in India has surged by up to 46% around the Rakshabandhan weekend in August, reflecting a sharp rise in demand. This year, the Rakshabandhan weekend spans from August 15 to 19, with Independence Day on Thursday, August 15, and Rakshabandhan on Monday, August 19.

A recent review of data from Business Standard, reveals significant increases in airfare. From August 14 to 20, the average fare on the Bengaluru-Kochi route stands at Rs 3,446, marking a 46.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Likewise, the average fare for the Bengaluru-Mumbai route is Rs 3,969 during this period, reflecting a 37.6% rise from last year.

Reportedly, a substantial number of planes in India remain grounded due to engine issues, supply-chain challenges, or financial difficulties. When an aircraft or its passengers are grounded, the plane is unable to take off. 

As of July 26, IndiGo, India’s largest airline, reported that approximately 70 of its 382 aircraft were out of service. This has resulted in a relatively slow increase in flight availability, impacting capacity growth on major routes.
