India has secured the 80th position in the latest Henley Passport Index for 2026. This marks a notable shift in India’s global travel mobility.

This ranking marks an improvement from 2025, when India stood at the 85th spot. Despite the jump in rank, the number of destinations Indian passport holders can access visa-free has slightly decreased to 55, compared to 57 in the previous year.

The index ranks passports based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and continues to highlight the gap between the world's most and least powerful travel documents.

Singapore has retained its title as the world’s most powerful passport, offering its citizens visa-free entry to 192 countries. It is followed closely by Japan and South Korea, which share the second position with access to 188 destinations.

Neighbouring countries also saw shifts in their rankings, with Bangladesh moving to the 95th position and Pakistan reaching 98th. Despite these improvements, both nations remain in the bottom tier of the global index.

"The 2026 rankings are determined based on the number of global destinations a passport holder can access without a prior visa. While India has climbed five spots to reach the 80th position, the data shows that the country remains in the lower half of the global mobility table, sharing its rank with nations like Niger and Algeria."
