India’s largest airline IndiGo has decided to introduce a fuel surcharge on flight tickets from March 14 as rising aviation fuel prices push up operating costs.

The airline said aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which typically accounts for nearly 40 percent of its operating expenses, has become significantly costlier in recent weeks due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The increase has prompted the carrier to adjust ticket pricing through a separate fuel surcharge.

Under the revised structure, passengers on domestic flights and routes within the Indian subcontinent will pay a surcharge of Rs 425 per ticket.

For flights connecting India with West Asia, the surcharge will be Rs 900. Passengers travelling on routes to Southeast Asia and China, as well as some services covering Africa and parts of West Asia, will be charged Rs 1,800.

The highest surcharge of Rs 2,300 will apply to flights operating between India and Europe.

IndiGo said the surcharge has been introduced to partly absorb the impact of higher fuel costs. According to the airline, passing the entire rise in fuel expenses directly into ticket fares would have resulted in a much sharper increase for passengers.
