Delhi High Court issued contempt of court notice to Wikipedia.
Wikipedia Shut Down in India Latest News? The Delhi High Court issued a contempt notice to Wikipedia on Thursday after news agency ANI alleged that the platform failed to comply with a court order to provide subscriber information about individuals responsible for making allegedly defamatory edits to ANI's Wikipedia page.
Justice Navin Chawla expressed strong disapproval of Wikipedia's actions, warning that failure to comply could result in serious consequences, including potential contempt of court and even a government-imposed ban on the platform in India.
"I will impose contempt. It is not about whether Defendant No. 1 [Wikipedia] is an entity in India or not. We will shut down your business transactions here. We will ask the government to block Wikipedia," Justice Chawla remarked, stressing that similar arguments had been rejected in previous cases. He added, "If you don't like India, please don't operate in India."
The court has directed an authorized representative of Wikipedia to appear in person on October 25 for the next hearing.
ANI has filed a defamation lawsuit against Wikipedia, accusing the platform of allowing edits that labeled the news agency as a "propaganda tool" for the current government.
Previously, the High Court had summoned Wikipedia and ordered the disclosure of information regarding three individuals who made these edits. ANI's recent contempt application was filed due to non-compliance with this order.
Wikipedia's legal counsel responded, explaining that the platform needed time to address the court's order, citing the fact that Wikipedia is not based in India. However, Justice Chawla rejected this reasoning, reiterating that it had been dismissed in earlier cases and signaling that the court is prepared to take further action if necessary.
