Bihar Approves India’s First-Ever Energy Museum in Patna
According to a spokesperson for the Bihar state’s energy department, the proposed energy museum in Patna has taken a significant step forward after a high-level meeting cleared key elements of the project’s timeline and the process for selecting implementation agencies. Once it is completed, this institution will be India’s first dedicated energy museum and only the fourth such facility in the world. It is a notable milestone in preserving and promoting India’s energy heritage.
The meeting was chaired by Anjani Kumar Singh, who is the adviser to the Chief Minister and Director-General of the Bihar Museum, who finalised directives on project deadlines, eligibility rules for executing agencies, and the overall framework for appointing the body that will carry out the implementation.
The museum will be developed by the Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL) on a three-acre plot at the site of the defunct Karbigahiya thermal power plant in Patna. This location, previously a major centre of electricity generation, provides a historically significant setting for a museum dedicated to energy systems.
Officials who attended the session included Manoj Kumar Singh, Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of BSPHCL, and Rahul Kumar, Managing Director of the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL). Mahendra Kumar, Managing Director of the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL), Ashok Kumar Sinha, Additional Director of the Bihar Museum, and other members of the project’s special committee were also present.
A detailed project presentation was made during the meeting, reflecting a structured approach toward advancing the museum from concept to execution. The museum is expected to serve as a modern centre for educational research, tourism, and energy heritage preservation, highlighting the evolution of power generation and technologies in India.
According to officials, with the key project components now approved, the initiative will move closer to realisation, reinforcing Bihar’s commitment to cultural and technological education through this unique heritage institution.
