Punjabi Literature Mourns: Legendary Sikh Scholar Jaiteg Singh Anant Passes Away
According to a statement issued by the Foundation, the Waris Shah Foundation expressed deep grief over the untimely demise of renowned Sikh scholar and eminent photojournalist Jaiteg Singh Anant, describing his passing as an irreparable loss to the Sikh intellectual circle and Punjabi literature.
Dr Bikram Singh Ghumman, president of the Foundation, along with general secretary Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, press secretary Amrit Lal Mannan and other members, highlighted Anant’s invaluable contributions to Punjabi literature, Sikh history and the world of art through his writings and visual work.
Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala said that by profession Anant was a highly accomplished photojournalist and had received more than 70 national and international awards. He added that Anant’s journalistic career began in 1968 with the daily Jathedar newspaper, and in his early years he also served as an art critic for Punjabi newspapers, carving out a distinct identity in his field.
He further added that Anant was the first Canadian author whose book Ghadri Yodhe was honoured with the Best Book Award by the Punjab Language Department. Over the years he enriched Punjabi with more than two dozen books covering literature, the freedom movement, Sikh history, art, music, culture and heritage.
Gumtala added that Anant had friends, admirers and well-wishers across Canada, India, Pakistan, the US, the UK, Hong Kong, and Australia, and that his rich legacy and lasting contributions to Punjabi literature and culture will always be remembered.
