Nearly 200 Flights Delayed as Dense Fog Engulfs Delhi-NCR, Rail Services Affected
As dense winter fog hit Delhi-NCR, it severely reduced visibility and disrupted air and rail services. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) recorded extensive flight disruptions as near-zero visibility conditions prevailed during the morning peak. Around 10.30 am, at least 178 departures and 69 arrivals were delayed, based on flight tracking data cited in the report, while airport authorities reported six flight cancellations directly impacted by foggy weather conditions.
Airport officials said that operations were conducted under CAT III low-visibility procedures to allow aircraft to land safely amid the thick fog. The IGI Airport also noted that ground teams were actively assisting passengers and urged travellers to contact airlines for the latest flight information.
Rail services were also affected, with many trains running late across northern India due to impaired visibility on tracks on Monday morning.
In response to the weather department’s forecast of continued dense to very dense fog, major carriers also issued travel advisories. IndiGo Airlines warned that fluctuating visibility could slow down airport operations at both Delhi and Hindon airports and asked passengers to remain patient as schedules stabilise. Air India and SpiceJet also advised travellers to check flight statuses and allow extra time for their journeys.
According to the meteorological forecasts, dense fog is likely to persist in the region through the next few days, potentially prolonging delays and travel disruptions.
