The Punjab government has expanded free anti-rabies vaccination services to 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics (AACs) across the state to tackle the public health crisis arising from stray dogs. The initiative addresses a critical health issue, as Punjab reports nearly three lakh dog bite cases annually.

The expansion is focused on ensuring that life-saving treatment is accessible and affordable for all, especially for daily wage workers, children, and the elderly who are most vulnerable.

Previously, access to the anti-rabies vaccine was restricted to only 48 primary health centres, often forcing victims to travel long distances and lose daily wages to complete the mandatory five-dose schedule.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh said that by integrating these services into the AAC network, the state is building a safer healthcare system where treatment is available "close to home and without financial burden".

Recent data shows that an average of 1,500 dog bite patients have sought treatment at these clinics every month over the last quarter.

With Aam Aadmi Clinics already handling over 4.6 crore OPD visits, the government believes this integration will significantly reduce rabies fatalities by allowing patients to start the free five-dose vaccination course within minutes of a bite.
