A high-level death analysis study commissioned by the Madhya Pradesh government has officially linked 15 deaths in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area to the consumption of sewage-contaminated drinking water.

The report was conducted by experts at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College. It was submitted on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, marking a significant increase from the previous official count of ten deaths.

Clinical tests confirmed the presence of lethal pathogens, including E. coli, Klebsiella, and Vibrio cholerae; the panel of five doctors reached their conclusion after analysing treatment records and symptoms of 21 individuals who succumbed during the December-January outbreak.

While the district administration has already distributed ex-gratia compensation of INR 2 lakh to 18 families on a "humanitarian basis", officials noted that a lack of post-mortem reports had previously made it difficult to formally attribute the fatalities to the water crisis.
