Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget 2026–27 in Parliament, allocating Rs 1,06,530.42 crore to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, reflecting an increase of nearly 10% over the Revised Estimates of FY 2025–26.

To provide significant relief to patients, especially those undergoing cancer treatment, the Budget proposes a full exemption of basic customs duty on 17 life-saving drugs and medicines.

Further, seven additional rare diseases have been included for exemption of import duties on personal imports of drugs, medicines, and food for special medical purposes, substantially reducing treatment costs and easing the financial burden on affected families.

Under the Union Budget 2026–27, major investments have also been proposed for the modernisation and expansion of healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment and strengthening of Cancer Centres in medical institutions.
