Kurukshetra: As many as 67 volunteers of the Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh (RKM), an umbrella organisation of various farmer unions in the country, courted arrest at Pipli near here today.
RKM activists have been protesting at various places, including Kurukshetra, since August 8 in support of their demand for the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report.
A senior leader of the Bhartiya Kisan Union, Rakesh Kumar Bains, said farmers would continue their protest till the Centre accepted their demands. He said the RKM was holding similar protests in 22 states.
Bains said the farm sector’s contribution to the GDP was 65 per cent in 1947, which had fallen to 11 per cent today. The BKU activist said it was due to anti-farmer policies adopted by various governments that lakhs of debt-ridden farmers were forced to commit suicide.
