Beyond the Field: Punjab Shifts to ‘Agri-Entrepreneurship’ to Shield Farmers from Market Risks
Punjab’s agricultural leadership is initiating a strategic shift toward a high-tech “entrepreneurial mindset” to safeguard the state’s farming community from the triple threat of water depletion, climate volatility, and fluctuating global markets. According to the report, Administrative Secretary for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Arshdeep Singh Thind met with senior faculty at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to prepare a roadmap that moves farmers "beyond the field and into the factory."
Thind emphasized that value addition and agro-processing are now required for a stable "fiscal harvest," particularly as international tariffs impact traditional exports. To support this transition, PAU has begun establishing Agro-Processing Complexes (APC) across the state. These hubs provide farmers with industrial machinery for milling, grading, and advanced packaging, such as vacuum and nitrogen-flush systems, to extend product shelf life.
PAU Vice-Chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal said that this move toward individual entrepreneurship is already yielding results in sectors like honey-based products and jaggery production. By processing their own crops, farmers can bypass market middlemen, supply quality food directly to consumers, and double rural incomes.
