As Cold Grips Northern States, Farmers Navigate Challenges to Shield Potatoes, Sorghum, Pulses, and Vegetables from Damaging Fog

Farming Techniques Latest: In the face of biting cold affecting various states, particularly Punjab, farmers are grappling with the adverse impact of fog on their meticulously cultivated crops. The inclement weather threatens to mar their hard work and compromise the quality of crops such as potatoes, sorghum, pulses, and vegetables. To mitigate these challenges, innovative and accessible methods are being employed by farmers to shield their produce from the detrimental effects of fog.

One simple yet effective technique involves addressing the impact of freezing fog on leaves. As snow freezes on the leaf surface, it induces a drop in internal leaf temperature, leading to potential damage. This is particularly pronounced in areas where crops are planted directly in the ground without protective measures. The risk is further heightened in dry conditions. Moisture in the soil is identified as a crucial factor in controlling fog-related damage. A well-moisturized field allows for better heat absorption, thereby safeguarding crops from the harmful effects of fog.

It is emphasized that soil moisture up to 30 cm is instrumental in preventing heat loss through the ground, making it an essential aspect of fog protection. To illustrate, a comparison between irrigated and non-irrigated fields reveals that fog causes more damage in fields lacking sufficient moisture. For crops like pulses, mustard, and potatoes, maintaining soil moisture according to seasonal requirements becomes imperative.

Furthermore, it is highlighted that weak or struggling crops are more susceptible to fog damage. Weeds within the crops obstruct the transfer of heat to the ground, debunking the common misconception that they offer protection. Farmers are advised to eliminate weeds to enhance the effectiveness of fog protection measures.

For farmers still apprehensive about fog-related threats, employing smoke in the fields is recommended. By generating a layer of smoke, particularly during early morning hours when it tends to linger close to the ground, farmers can create a protective barrier against fog. Additionally, installing fountains on sprinklers and running them early in the morning aids in washing leaves and removing accumulated fog.

A proactive approach involving the use of Thiourea is suggested as well. Farmers can prepare a solution by combining 1 gram of thiourea with 2 liters of water and applying it through spraying. This method offers an additional layer of defense, potentially saving crops from fog-induced damage.

In essence, these innovative and practical approaches empower farmers to tackle the challenges posed by fog during the harsh winter months, ensuring the protection and prosperity of their hard-earned crops.
