PAU Launches 24/7 Shield: Experts to Save Punjab Crops from Severe Cold

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana has announced 24x7 support for the farming community as a proactive move to safeguard the agricultural sector from the ongoing severe cold wave. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, emphasised that the current "severe chill" and dense fog conditions necessitate immediate scientific intervention to prevent crop damage.

Strategic Support and Advisories

PAU has mobilised its team of experts to provide real-time guidance through various digital platforms and dedicated helplines. The report highlights that the university is focusing specifically on wheat, mustard, and vegetable crops, which are most vulnerable to frost.

According to university officials, scientists are now available around the clock to answer queries regarding irrigation timing and nutrient management, which are critical during plummeting temperatures.

Field-Level Interventions

The university’s extension wings and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) have been directed to maintain a constant vigil. Experts are advising farmers to apply light irrigation to crops to maintain soil temperature and protect against freezing. Furthermore, the university is utilising its "Kheti Sandesh" WhatsApp groups to disseminate weather-based alerts directly to thousands of farmers across Punjab.

By bridging the gap between scientific research and field application during this weather crisis, PAU aims to minimise potential yield losses. This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to ensuring food security and supporting the livelihoods of the state's farmers during extreme environmental challenges.
