Healthcare Education Revamp: BFUHS Becomes Sole Authority for Pharmacy and Healthcare Courses in Punjab
In a major restructuring of Punjab’s medical education, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, has been named the sole controlling authority for all pharmacy and healthcare courses in the state. This responsibility, previously held by the Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training, has been transferred with immediate effect. Consequently, health-related programmes formerly managed by IKG Punjab Technical University and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University will now fall under BFUHS oversight.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajiv Sood stated that this realignment follows the university’s legal statutes, which mandate that all health-related education be governed by BFUHS. The shift aims to centralise administration, raise academic standards, and improve training for students in paramedical and pharmacy fields. Dr. Sood highlighted that the university has recently modernised its infrastructure and filled long-vacant faculty positions to support this expansion.
Simultaneously, the Punjab Government has handed over the administration of four major health facilities to BFUHS to better integrate clinical training with public service. These include the Civil Hospitals in Badal and Sri Khadur Sahib, the Community Health Centre in Jalalabad, and the Tertiary Cancer Care Centre in Fazilka.
BFUHS will now manage the staff, infrastructure, and operations of these centres. The university is also expanding its nursing sector, with several new government nursing colleges currently in development to strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.
