Major CBSE 2026 Reform: Digital ‘On-Screen Marking’ to End Totalling Errors for Class 12 Boards

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of an On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for Class 12 board examinations beginning February 17, 2026. According to a circular issued on February 9, the move aims to enhance assessment efficiency, transparency, and accuracy. Under this digital reform, Class 12 answer sheets will be scanned and evaluated on-screen, while Class 10 evaluation will continue in physical mode for 2026.

CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said that the OSM system is designed to eliminate totalling errors and reduce manual intervention through automated coordination. The system facilitates broader teacher participation, allowing educators from affiliated schools to evaluate papers from their own premises. This is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and time. Bhardwaj further described the initiative as an environmentally sustainable digital reform that enables faster result processing.

Notably, the board clarified that post-result verification of marks will no longer be required. To ensure a smooth transition, CBSE has directed schools to prepare necessary infrastructure, including computer labs with public static IPs, Windows 8 or above, and at least 4 GB RAM. The board will support schools through training programmes, dry runs, and a dedicated call centre to resolve technical issues for the nearly 46 lakh students appearing for the annual exams.
